The United States central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, representing the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a range of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary moment for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but stays modest. “Employment growth have slowed,” the release notes. “Inflation has moved up and stays moderately high.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are on leave during the closure.
Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves
The Federal Reserve typically analyzes labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The number of positions created to the market in August was down by over 100k since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the highest since 2021.
Private Data Indicate Ongoing Decline
Though the bureau was scheduled to publish last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure began. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has declined significantly,” Fed chair Jerome Powell stated earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from immigration and tariff policies.
Price Data Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that prices are rising, albeit gradually. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
