Each time a prominent honors show approaches, one notices a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor unsung work and fill the passions of fans who have specialized interests.
My colleague made the case for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are board games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I have a cast-iron argument backing this proposal stands as crucial above others. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it remains highly personal, and it will always generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. But it is an essential concession in the world of video games, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards presently include award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, making space possible for most games within them.
This doesn't apply to puzzle games. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Think about these recent excellent titles, each quite distinct: building puzzles from a specific release, intense tile-matching in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Where could they possibly go within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens outstanding logic titles released every year that have no home at major award shows, unless they happen to qualify award groups including Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- One classic puzzle game received no recognition in any category during that awards season
- Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
- Well-received sorting experience got ignored that year
- Only a few logic titles managed to sneak into niche award types
Importance of Logic Titles
Commonly they're compact experiences, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it additionally competes for top gaming experience. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have such difficulty. One could readily select five nominees engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, since numerous excellent so many good games out.
To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories during prominent ceremonies. Brain-teaser creators operate at the demanding boundary interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
